Colonel Edward Hopkins was the 7th child of 11 children born to Frances Hopkins (1770-1821) and Rebecca Sayre (1776-1850). He married Mary Evelina Dufour (1814-1840) on 25 April 1832 in Camden Georgia. They had five children: Mary Evelina Hopkins Titus, John Frances Hopkins, Coriolanus Hopkins, Rebecca Louis Hopkins Sollee and Georgia Hopkins Harby. He married a second time in 1864 in Jacksonville, Florida to Lonny and they had one son, Howell Titus Hopkins, who was born in 1866.
He served in the Confederate States Army during the civil war, enlisting as a Colonel on 27 July 1861 in Company S, 4th Regiment, Florida and resigned on 12 May 1862. He was the Constitutional Union Candidate for Governor of Florida (1860), served as Mayor of Jacksonville (1868-1870) as a democrat and served as U.S.Collector of Customs in 1879.
He was a weathly and prominent planter and Hopkins Avenue in Titusville, Florida was named in honor of his daughter, Mary Hopkins Titus who was married to Henry Theodore Titus, the founder of Titusville, Florida. She is buried next to her father at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, FL.
