Annual East Mims Easter Parade.
We welcome multi-ethnic artists, entertainers, speakers, choirs, singers,
musicians, schools and poets to perform as well as vendors that sell Afrocentric
food, clothes, jewelry, and other products.
It was the year 1963, while sitting on my mother's porch on Easter Day, that I was first inspired to begin what has now become the Annual East Mims Easter Parade. You should have seen the little boys and girls walking up and down the street that day showing off their Easter finery. After that I talked with the pastor of my church about having the children in my Sunday School Class do an Easter March. He thought it was a very good idea, and the next year we had the first East Mims Easter Parade sponsored by St. Johns Primitive Baptist Church.
The Parade started out as a religious march. Donald Rains led the march carrying a cross on his back as the choir walked behind him singing songs that told the story of Christ and his resurrection. "He Arose" was the theme song of the parade. Eventually all of the churches in the community began to participate; and as the years went by churches from different areas and communities began to participate. The Brevard County Sheriff's Department has participated from day one.
The Parade has proven itself to be a great opportunity for people within the community to communicate and socialize. Over the years the parade has helped keep the community together, as residents young and old come together for common purpose.
For 35 years I served as the chairperson of the Parade, however, I began to feel that the task had become too great a responsibility for one person. I did not want the tradition to end so I went to the East Mims Civic League and asked them if they would take over the task of organizing the parade. They agreed and I retired as chairperson of the parade in 1998.
