THANKS           INDEX

Our thanks to those volunteers who help and keep this Center running in a most efficient manner. We sometimes accept their services too casually and often times need to remind ourselves that we could not open our doors without their help. So to all of your we do appreciate your efforts and time spent in our behalf.

BINGO           INDEX

We hold Bingo games here every Thursday morning. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. and the games begin at 10:00 a.m. Six hard cards are $7.00 and additional ones are nominally priced. Refreshments are available and it's a good day's pleasure.

STOP GAP           INDEX

We always have a container in our lobby that holds the food donated by friends to this worthy organization. With the holidays in the offing the need is somehow more meaningful and more necessary. When you go shopping for your holiday foodstuff, add just a package or a tin more for those whose need is great. Your contributions are so much appreciated.

KITCHEN MEDICINE           INDEX

Phytochemicals are unique plant chemicals found in fruits and vegetables. They are essential in maintaining health and preventing heart disease, cancer, etc. Some phytochemicals you should become familiar with are Allicin (garlic), Lycopene (tomatoes), quercetin (onions), genistein (soybeans) flavonoids (grapes) and litein (lefay greens). Lutein, a carotenoid similar to beta carotene, is highly concentrated in kale, collard greens and spinach and has been found to lower the risk of age related macular degeneration; a common cause of visual loss in seniors.

Quercetin, an antioxidant, is present in abundance in onions. This phytochemical has been shown to posses anti-fungal, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-biotic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Lycopene is a strong antioxidant found in tomatoes and watermelon. High blood levels of this phytochemical are said to reduce the incidence of prostate cancer, pancretic cancer and age related mental impairment. Flavonoids are antioxidants found in red grapes, red wine, peanuts and citrus fruit. Flavonoids are believed to decrease the incidence of heart attacks and to destroy circulating free oxygen radicals which are known to injure normal cells and may be the inciting cause of cancerous grouths.
