FY2001 BUDGET AND ANNUAL PERFORMANCE PLAN FOR CANAVERAL NATIONAL SEASHORE ARE AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC REVIEWCanaveral National Seashore Superintendent Robert Newkirk announced today that the park's annual performance plan and documents providing details about the appropriated budget and fee revenues for FY2001 are available for public review as required by the National Parks Omnibus Management Act of 1998.
Highlights of the park's budget, which funds specific goals in the annual performance plan include:
$166,398 for resource preservation and management: Some of the projects related to these funds are the stabilization and monitoring of archeological sites such as the American Indian middens found in several areas of the park, protection and monitoring of loggerhead, leatherback and green sea turtle nests, water quality which is extremely important to the more than 310 species of birds and 1,045 species of plants that are found at Canaveral and the revegatation of the dunes.
$850,877 for visitor services: These funds are used for Law Enforcement and the protection and safety of visitors. Interpretation and education programs for visitors and school groups are included in this funding. Canaveral volunteers and interpretation staff go to local schools with travel trunk displays and videos to help education children about manatees and dolphins. Other projects funded are the cast net program and Junior Ranger program.
User fees or park entrance fees are utilized for fee collection and lifeguards, at a cost of approximately $345,000 for the year.
$767,925 for facility operations and maintenance: These funds provide maintenance and upkeep of all comfort stations, visitor center, park buildings, road repair, sanitation and utility costs.
$378,900 for park management and administration: This is for the park superintendent and full administrative staff that oversee all functions of administration such as budget, personnel, procurement and property accountability.
Some of the projects funded by fee revenue that visitors will see accomplished in the coming months are a new assessable trail at parking lot #8 near the Eldora State House, new information signs, and new wayside exhibits.
