24% of the adult population in Brevard County is reading at Basic or Below Basic reading levels. The Literacy Alliance mission is to stamp out illiteracy in Brevard County by providing free tutoring in Reading, Writing, and English as a Second Language
We are an organization of volunteers who are using our time and talents in tutoring adults in Reading, Writing, and English as a Second Language. The Literacy Alliance of Brevard has almost 300 volunteers who tutor adult learners in public libraries or other locations near their homes. We use the Laubach approach to teaching and New Readers Press materials for instruction.
We provide free training for our tutors.
Margie Kinslow is endorsed in Reading K-12 by the State of Florida, and provides 12 hours of tutor training.
The tutor training includes:
- Characteristics of the Adult Learner
- Responsibilities of Tutors
- The 4 Components of Literacy: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening
- The 5 Components of Reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension
- Helping Adult Learners Set Goals
- Planning and Writing Lesson Plans
All materials in our program are very user friendly. When tutors complete our training, they are confident they will be successful in tutoring adults. Teaching manuals and materials are loaned to our tutors.

We will tutor any adult who desires to improve their reading and/or writing skills, or anyone who wishes to improve in English as a Second Language and is a legal resident of the United States. Please don't hesitate to call and ask for help! Your future will be brighter with literacy skills.

Membership
Literacy Alliance of Brevard is a fictitious name registered to Brevard Adult Literacy Volunteers, Inc. a 501(c) (3) corporation that is incorporated in the state of Florida. All contributions are tax deductible. (Taxpayer I.D. #23-7153312).
We depend upon donations from individuals, businesses, organizations, and corporations for funding all aspects of our totally volunteer organization.
Please join our organization. Your membership fee provides reading materials for those who cannot afford them, tutoring materials for tutors, and also supports our local office of volunteer workers.
- Volunteer Membership Dues: $12.00 per year
- Individual Membership Dues: $36.00 per year
- Business, Corporation, Organization Dues: $120.00 per year.
Membership dues are paid in January. Those joining after January make a single payment of the prorated dues for the remainder of the year.
