The establishment of our new library has been enhanced by fund-raising by the Friends of the Library and by donations from community-minded individuals and businesses.Some of the fund-raisers held by the FRIENDS include: book sales, bake sales, sale of McDonalds coupon books at holiday times, a Dining Out Raffle in which the winner received free meals at various local eating establishments, and pancake breakfasts at McDonalds of Mims. Items that have been donated by library supporters include books, videos, office supplies, a TV and VCR, cabinets, a slide projector, indoor plants, etc. Several other amenities, such as periodical subscriptions and a book drop unit, have been purchased with monetary contributions. Contributions can be specified toward a particular item or made to the general fund to use where needed.Volunteer workers are essential to the operation of the library. Joining the FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY and participating in their fund-raisers and other activities is another good way to help out.
FRIENDS FUNDRAISER - "ANN'S CANS"!
Ann Kreuzinger has initiated an ongoing drive to recycle aluminum cans. So far nine finger puppets for the children's section of the library have been acquired from these efforts, and a puppet theater is the next goal to save toward. "You will be amazed at how many cans littering the roads that you can collect just taking your daily walk!" Ann says. If you know of a location, such as your workplace, where soda cans are being tossed in with the regular trash, here's your chance to help both the ecology and the library, by providing a receptacle and arranging pickup on a regular basis. Let your friends, relatives, and neighbors know you are saving cans. The Kreuzingers are even willing to take your bags in for redemption, full of cans, smashed or not. Call them at 269-7376. Let's have enormous participation on this! The funds raised by our book sales and bake sales and membership dues are not sufficient for the budget, and eventually we hope the can collection can become a significant help. Become a FRIEND!We welcome anyone with other fund-raising ideas to join the FRIENDS and attend our meetings.
The library's Thursday evening programs, including the recent presentations sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council, have been well attended. Anyone who would like to donate an item to raffle at one of these events, with proceeds going to the FRIENDS, should call 264-5080 or see any FRIENDS officer.
