Volunteer Opportunities
Hello Volunteers, We had a number of dedicated and hard working volunteers assist with NovemberÕs events. On SL3, we watered our newly added native plants, re-opened a tidal channel that silted in and planted mangroves along the islands inner wetland. Some pictures are included below. Thank you to everyone who participated in the event! In January we will be heading to BC47, an island that underwent volunteer exotic removal and replanting last season. Details of the event are listed below. The cold months also mark the beginning of nesting season for several bird species on spoil islands. Anyone interested in assisting IRLAP staff with bird surveys on weekdays, please contact Marc Virgilio at the email address listed below.
December Ê18th, (8:30am-12:30pm), Round Island Enhancement Day: Dane Wilson will be conducting his Eagle Scout Community Service Project at Round Island Park. You can participate by helping to removing (marked) exotic plants, rake pathways, sand & stain the kiosk, or install 2 benches. Lunch, refreshments, water and sun-screen will be provided. January 8th, (8:30am-12:30pm), BC47 Enhancement Day: We will be launching from ChristensenÕs Landing in Grant. On this trip we will be removing any exotics that have resprouted, water added native plants, clear areas of exotics for future native plantings, and conduct a general island cleanup. Please arrive a little before 8:30am to be ready to depart on time. We will return to the boat ramp between noon and 12:30pm. Be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty. Gloves, drinks, and sunscreen will be provided. You may want to bring something to snack on.

January 15th (8am-12pm) Nursery Maintenance Day has been CANCELED!
January 15th (10am-4pm), Brevard Zoo Mangrove Planting and Oyster Appreciation Day: Would you like to be a foster parent to red mangroves that will one day be planted in the Indian River Lagoon? The Brevard ZooÕs Conservation Program will be setting up a mangrove planting station at the zoo.Ê Zoo staff will provide everything you need to pot your foster mangroves.Ê You will be asked to care for the mangroves for several months and then return them.Ê Once returned the mangroves will be transported to the Shoreline Restoration Project Coastal Wetland Plant Nursery in Sebastian. They will be conditioned and cared for until they are planted by volunteers along shorelines of the Indian River Lagoon. There will also be an educational booth on oysters and their role within the lagoon system.Ê Materials will be supplied for zoo visitors to make oyster mats.
