GUYS AND DOLLS

by Jo Swerling & Abe Burrows
Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser

Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy - considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy-soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends: Sarah Brown (Malinda Myers), the upright but uptight "mission doll," out to reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky Masterson (Broadway veteran Patrick Sullivan), the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide (Mindy Selby), the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit (Jeff Ferguson), her devoted fiancé, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game. Add to this a sprinkling of cartoon gangster high jinx and Guys and Dolls is a musical theatre classic not to be missed.

The Titusville Playhouse at the Historic Emma Parrish Theatre Announces
THE 11th ANNUAL TITUSVILLE FOLLIES

It's A Grand Night for Singing

Show dates and times: March 19th and 20th at 7:30 PM and March 21st at 2 PM.

This year's show, with over 45 cast members, aged 10 to 81 (some first timers and some old Follies' Favorites) is a celebration of the lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein, the preeminent American musical dramatist of the 20th Century. He wrote 46 shows and more than 850 songs over a 40 year period that covered the operettas of the 1920's and 1930's and dominated the golden era of the Broadway and Hollywood musicals of the 1940's and 1950's.

Composers (including Youmans, Friml, Romberg, Kern, and Rogers) did their finest work with Hammerstein. With Kern and Rogers, he revolutionized musical theater by integrating the plot, the characters and the music. This began with Show Boat in 1927 which he wrote with Jerome Kern and was fully realized in 1943 with Oklahoma, the first show he wrote with Richard Rogers. Rogers recognized the vital importance of Hammerstein's lyrics and composed his music after Hammerstein wrote the lyrics. Three quarters of a century later, Hammerstein's musicals are still revived on Broadway and are among the most popular shows in community theater.

Hammerstein learned his craft from Otto Harbach with whom he collaborated on eight shows. You probably don't recognize his name, but you will know his music from "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" to "The Night Was Made for Love". In his turn, Hammerstein guided the development of Stephen Sondheim, one of the premier modern American lyricist/composers who has won nine Tony Awards, more than any other composer. Think of West Side Story and Gypsy and you're thinking Sondheim.

Ticket Prices are: Orchestra $17 and Balcony $15

SILVER ANNIVERSARY SEASON AT THE PLAYHOUSE

The Titusville Playhouse (TPI) is proud to announce its 25th Anniversary season at its home at the historic Emma Parish Theatre in downtown Titusville. The Playhouse, initially formed in 1962 by the merger of two community theatres, began performing at the Emma Parish in 1985, after remodeling and refurbishing the historical building, which dates from 1905. This Anniversary season is a look-back at that illustrious past, with each main stage productions a hit show from the past 25 years.

The season begins with that riotous country-western comedy musical, PHANTOM OF THE OP'RY, which TPI first produced during the summer of 1999. PHANTOM will also be this season's summer show, opening July 17 and playing through July 25.

GREASE, the "new" 50's rock-&-roll musical that brings us all back to high school, was the opening production for the 1999-2000 subscription season, and will also begin this subscription season, playing August 14 through 29.

Paul Rudnick's comedy, I HATE HAMLET, occupied the second slot in the 1995-1996 season, and will do the same this time around, playing September 25 through October 10.

TPI first produced THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG in May of 1989, and will bring the Neil Simon/Marvin Hamlisch (A CHORUS LINE, THE STING)/Carol Bayer Sager musical back November 6 through November 21.

LOST IN YONKERS, Neil Simon's award-winning bittersweet comedy, was first produced here for the 1994-1995 season, and will play this time January 15 through January 30.

GUYS AND DOLLS, one of everyone's favorite musical comedies, kicked off the 1995-1996 season in September, and this time around will anchor the main stage season, playing February 26 through March 13.

TPI will conclude the main stage season with the popular Anthony Marriott/Alistair Foot farce, NO SEX PLEASE, WE'RE BRITISH, first produced here in November of 1987, this time around playing May 14 through May 29.

Of course, the main stage season represents only a portion of the many activities at the Playhouse. In the intimate, 60-seat Emma's Attic, TPI will present a special "Girl's Night Out series, featuring plays exclusively about the fairer sex: PARALLEL LIVES, by Mo Gaffney and Kathy Najimy, October 23-31; VANITIES, by Jack Heifner, February 5-13; and A COUPLA WHITE CHICKS SITTING AROUND TALKING, by John Ford Noonan, April 16-23.
TPI Rising Stars Theatre, of one 5 TPI youth programs, presents two main stage shows each year. For 2009/10, the Rising Stars will play THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, adapted by William Buck, December 11-13, and Richard R. George's adaptation of CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, April 22-24. Rising Stars will also present a special production for the Florida Theatre Conference, FOOL OF THE WORLD (by John Urquhart, Rita Grauer, and Paul Picus), plus an evening of improvisational comedy. In addition, TPI will host performances by its Summer Camps, and by the younger Children's Theatre Arts (CTA) programs.
This year, TPI will offer 4 ticket choices. In addition to regular season subscriptions, you can buy subscriptions to the 3-play Emma's Attic season, or the 2-play mainstage Rising Stars Theatre season. As an alternative, for the same price as a mainstage subscription, you can get a TPI Flex-Pass, which offers 6 admissions to any TPI show or shows of your choice, in any combination. Even better, a Flex-Pass never expires, so if you have to miss some shows, you can still use it next season.

TPI programs are sponsored in part by the Brevard County Board of Commissioners, the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, the Brevard Cultural Alliance, and the Real Yellow Pages from AT&T.

Are you in charge of planning activities for your group, club, or civic organization?

Many groups have already discovered that an evening or afternoon at the theater is a perfect way to bring people together. In addition to providing entertainment, watching a live production provides plenty of conversation fuel to spark discussions long after the curtain has closed.
