Sams House at Pine Island Hosts Free Medicinal Plant Hike
MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – Joe Zayas, an expert on medicinal plants and Florida geology, will lead a medicinal plant hike at the Sams House at Pine Island on Saturday, January 14 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Zayas, a volunteer with the Environmentally Endangered Lands Program for over 20 years, will discuss how plants have been used to treat the sick throughout history.
Another guided hike of the new half-mile nature trail will be given on Friday, January 13 at 1 p.m. The trail winds through a beautiful palm hammock. A tour of the 1875 Sams cabin and the 1888 Sams house will be given on Saturday, January 21 at 3 p.m.
There is no cost to attend any of these programs and reservations are not required.
The Sams cabin is the oldest standing home in Brevard County. John H. Sams was a citrus grower, businessmen, and the first Superintendent of Brevard Public Schools. Exhibits highlight the history of Pine Island, from the Ice Age to early pioneers. The Sams House at Pine Island is located at 6195 North Tropical Trail in Merritt Island, a half-mile west of State Road 3. It is open Thursdays to Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 321-449-4720.
