BLACK HISTORY CELEBRATION AT HARRY T. & HARRIETTE V. MOORE MEMORIAL PARK IN FEBRUARY
February, 2008
MIMS, Fla. - The Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park Cultural Center will host Black History Celebration during the month of February, taking the theme from W.E.B. DuBois' The Souls of Black Folk (1903), a seminal work in African American literature and an American classic. The intent of this book of essays, at that time, was to impress upon the world the particular experience of being an African American some forty years after the Civil War. The theme is being used to examine what was best about black culture historically and how that legacy can now benefit not only African Americans but the broader community.

The Journey of Henry Box Brown — at 2 p.m., children ages three to ten years will meet in the Griot tent to hear the story of The Journey of Henry Box Brown, a true story of a slave's brave determination, courage and dangerous quest for freedom that neither children nor adults will soon forget. Children will make and take home crafts.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T — When Did We Lose It? How Do We Get It Back? — at 7 p.m., a unique forum titled "R-E-S-P-E-C-T — When Did We Lose It? How Do We Get It Back?" will be facilitated by Leon Daniel Watts, Assistant Federal Public Defender. Community leaders and cultural influencers will challenge the collective silence about the erosion of respect for human values in America and how it impacts the perception of Black America in today's media.

Sankofa Celebration — from 1 to 5 p.m., the Sankofa Celebration will be held at the park. Sankofa is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg in its mouth symbolizing the future. Sankofa, literally translated from the Akan language, means "it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot."

EXPANDED HOURS OF OPERATION FOR HARRY T. & HARRIETTE V. MOORE CULTURAL CENTER
Juanita Barton, Cultural Center Coordinator
Office: 321-264-6595 — htmcc@brevardparks.com
As of Tuesday, September 7, 2004, the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Center will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Additional hours are available by appointment.
Opened on April 9, 2004, the 5,000 square foot cultural center is located in the 11.93-acre Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park at 2180 Freedom Avenue in Mims, the site of the original Moore family home.
On Christmas night 1951, the Moores were murdered for their involvement in the civil rights movement when a bomb exploded under their home. The park is dedicated to the celebration of their lives and to promoting awareness of their unique contributions to the early civil rights movement.
The cultural center currently features a timeline of strategic events of the pre-civil rights era. Serving to stimulate appreciation of African-American culture and heritage, programs will include visual, literary and performing arts, as well as on-site and outreach exhibitions. The center will soon be offering lectures, drama, dance, reading, and creative writing, and is a meeting place for community organizations. The 100-seat conference center has surround sound with a backlit screen. The library offers visitor access to reference materials relating to people of African descent. Landscaped with indigenous trees and foliage, and well shaded by large oaks, the park is ideal for concerts, weddings, games and other outdoor activities.
The non-profit corporation, Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex, Inc., is pursuing funding for future development that includes construction of a replica of the destroyed Moore home, a pavilion with full kitchen, and a playground. Donations or loans of memorabilia, documents and artifacts for future museum exhibits are welcomed.
This facility is managed by Brevard County Parks and Recreation, North Area. Call 264-6595 for more information on the park, cultural center, activities, and rentals.
