Road & Trail Closures
Road Closures: During extended periods of heavy rains, refuge dike roads become waterlogged and are subject to excessive rutting and pot hole development. In an attempt to protect the dike roads from damage and to prevent vehicles from getting stuck and/or damaged, some roads may be closed without notice. These closures normally last several days until the roads dry and driving conditions improve. If you encounter a closed gate that is normally open and the area near the gate is not posted with a sign which states: "Area Beyond This Sign Closed", you may enter by foot or by bicycle. If you have questions about the status of a road closure, please contact the refuge by phone or email.
No Motor Zone: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) has lifted one of their closures (i.e. the security closure that went into effect after 9/11 which covered the portion of the No Motor Zone east of the channel), but one closure still remains. The CCAFS is still enforcing a closed zone within a 10,000 foot semi-circle radius around a fuel facility located on the east shoreline. The center of the radius is located at: latitude 28 degrees, 27' 23", longitude 80 degrees 35'48". This closed zone covers roughly half the east side of the Banana River north of the 528 Causeway and south of the NASA Causeway. Their regulations state: "All unauthorized persons and craft shall stay clear of the area at all times."
Public Notices
The refuge visitor center is now closed on Sundays.
Shuttle Launch Closures:
The refuge typically closes to the public three days prior and the day of the shuttle launch. It may remain closed if the launch is delayed and rescheduled. The refuge typically closes during the day of a shuttle landing. Please call 321-861-0667 for addtional information.
