13. Windover Archeological SiteLocation: Vicinity South of TitusvilleThe Windover Archeological Site was discovered in 1982, during the development of the Windover Farms residential community southwest of Titusville. A backhoe operator found skeletal materials while removing peat from a small pond on the site. Development of the area was rerouted and three archeological investigations were conducted between 1984 and 1986. A pumping and "dewatering" system kept the site sufficiently dry for the archaeologists to excavate below the water table. This extremely significant Early Archaic burial site revealed a treasure trove of human brain tissue and bones, textiles and artifacts dating from 4,000 to 6,000 years B.C. providing valuable information on the biology, diet and environment of the inhabitants of this period. |
