PRESCRIBED FIRE
Weather permitting, a prescribed fire will be conducted by Canaveral National Seashore in a 910 acre tract in the Apollo Beach (Eldora) area south of New Smyrna Beach on Wednesday, April 7 or Thursday, April 8, 2010. The New Smyrna Beach Fire Department and Police Department will be notified in advance of the operation. For safety, the Apollo District south of the Visitor Center will be closed to visitors for the duration of the fire. The boat ramp, Visitor Center and Parking Lot #1 will remain open.This will be a joint operation with Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The purpose is to reduce unnaturally high levels of fuel that could ignite from lightning strikes during the summer. The operation will also improve habitat for a number of protected species.
