PRESCRIBED FIRE
Weather permitting, a prescribed fire will be conducted by Canaveral National Seashore in a 600 acre tract in the Bills Hill area (just south of Oak Hill) on March 19, 2010. Local agencies and adjacent landowners will be notified prior to the treatment.This will be a joint operation with Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The purpose is to reduce unnaturally high levels of fuel that could ignite from lightning strikes during the summer. The operation will also improve habitat for the federally-protected Florida Scrub Jay and Eastern Indigo Snake.
