PRESCRIBED FIRE
Weather permitting, a prescribed fire will be conducted by Canaveral National Seashore Friday, January 22nd, in a 400 acre tract in the Bills Hill area (just south of Oak Hill). If this attempt fails, we will try again the following week. Local agencies and adjacent landowners will be re-notified just prior to the treatment.This will be a joint operation with Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The purpose is to reduce unnaturally high levels of fuel that could ignite from lightning strikes during the summer. The operation will also improve habitat for the federally-protected Florida Scrub Jay and Eastern Indigo Snake.
