PRESCRIBED FIRE
Weather permitting; a one-day prescribed fire will be conducted by Canaveral National Seashore in a 60 acre tract just south of the North District (Apollo) Visitor Center. It will occur between Thursday, January 24th and the end of February. The Park cannot set the actual date more than a few days in advance because specific weather conditions are required to burn safely. In order to protect the public, the North District (Apollo) will be closed during the operation. This will be a joint project with Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The prescribed fire is necessary to reduce unnaturally high levels of fuel that could ignite from lightning strikes during the summer. The operation will also improve habitat for the federally-protected Florida Scrub Jay and Eastern Indigo Snake.
