Airboat will be used to Spray Brazilian Pepper on Spoil Islands along Intracoastal Waterway in Canaveral National Seashore
Beginning on Tuesday September 18, 2007, if weather permits, a multi-agency crew will spray Brazilian pepper on spoil islands along the Intracoastal Waterway in Mosquito Lagoon. Brazilian pepper is a non-native shrub that aggressively crowds out native plants. Canaveral National Seashore is working with the Department of Environmental Protection, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Volusia County to control exotic plants in areas around the Seashore and adjacent Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. To more efficiently cover the large area involved, an airboat and a foliar spray named Habitat will be used. The treatments will take approximately a week.
