PRESCRIBED FIRE
CONTACT: 321-267-1110 Ext. 14, John StinerWeather permitting, a prescribed fire will be conducted by Canaveral National Seashore in a 240 acre tract in the Bills Hill area (just south of Oak Hill) between February 15 and March 15, 2007. The Oak Hill Fire Department, City Hall, and Police Department will be notified one or two days in advance of the operation. In preparation for this burn, a firebreak has been cleared along the park boundary.
This will be a joint operation with Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The purpose is to reduce unnaturally high levels of fuel that could ignite from lightning strikes during the summer. The operation will also improve habitat for the federally-protected Florida Scrub Jay and Eastern Indigo Snake.
