Tue, 20 Jan 2009 BMHNS Staff Selected for Participation in National Program
Cocoa, FL (January 20, 2009) JaNeen M. Smith, Assistant Director, and Debby E. Moone, Development Consultant, for the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science (BMHNS), have been selected to serve as Museum Assessment Program (MAP) and Accreditation Program peer reviewers for the American Association of Museums (AAM).Selection for this program is extended only to qualified museum professionals who have significant museum experience and a proven understanding of the museum field. Applicants to the Peer Review Program are expected to demonstrate a record of active participation in the field-wide dialogue of museum operations, standards, best practices, and emerging issues.
AAM peer reviewers are considered among the best in their field. Peer reviewers volunteer their time to support AAM's Accreditation and Museum Assessment Programs. These two programs allow AAM to ensure that museums around the nation are performing up to current standards and best practices, and provide support and resources for museums that are looking to improve. When chosen for an assignment, a peer reviewer must read a museum's self-study, visit the museum to observe its operations firsthand, interview the institution' s staff and members of its Board of Trustees and write a detailed report of their findings.
"Peer reviewers play an integral role in the museum field's on-going efforts toward self-improvement," said Ford W. Bell, AAM president. "Peer reviewers demonstrate a commitment to their profession that is exemplary. Their selfless service enables museums across the country to better meet their obligations to the public trust."

Marykim Brown, Director, JaNeen Smith, Assistant Director & Debby Moone, Development Consultant Ms. Smith has held numerous positions in the museum field and has almost 30 years of professional museum experience. She has worked at the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, St. Leonard, MD, Catoctin Mountain Zoological Park, Thurmont, MD, and was the executive director of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine (NMCWM), Frederick, MD from 1996-2002. While at the NMCWM, Ms. Smith gained prominence in the museum field for leading the institution to full AAM accreditation in less than 8 years after the museum opened its doors to the public, making it one of the youngest institutions in the nation to receive AAM accreditation. From 2002-2007, Ms. Smith served as executive director of BMHNS. In the fall of 2007 she stepped down as its executive director and became assistant director in order to be able to devote more time to travel and to spend more time with her grandchildren.
Ms. Moone served as Director of Development at the NMCWM from 1996-2004. While there she gained the reputation as one of the best museum development professionals in the State of Maryland. Over her tenure with the NMCWM she gained prominence as one of the State's most successful grant writers and administrators. Additionally, the 5-year strategic plan Ms. Moone developed for the NMCWM was recognized by AAM as one of the best of its kind. As such, AAM sent the plan to other museums across the nation as an example through its technical information service. Ms. Moone joined the staff of BMHNS in 2004.
Marykim Brown, BMHNS Executive Director, said "I am extremely proud of the selection of Ms. Smith and Ms. Moone to serve as AAM peer reviewers -- their selection is a testament to the quality of staff and operations at BMHNS."
