John Moran's Journal of Light:
A Photographer's Search for the Soul of Florida
Keynote Presenter: John Moran
John Moran Photography"If Florida had a Photographer Laureate, John Moran should hold that title."
— Gary Mormino, Florida Studies Program, University of South FloridaTraveling the Sunshine State with his cameras, award-winning photographer John Moran seeks his vision of natural Florida as it must have appeared to Ponce de Leon and other early strangers in paradise. Moran's work celebrates the magic of a unique landscape born of water and blessed with beauty beyond measure. His photographs have been published in numerous books and magazines including National Geographic, Life, Time, Newsweek, Smithsonian, The New York Times Magazine and on the cover of the National Audubon Society Field Guide to Florida.
Moran's remarkable Journal of Light speaking programs, based on his book and touring museum exhibit of the same title, highlight a 20-year odyssey to discover the soul of one of the most photographed states in the country, and feature his striking photographs of the alligators, beaches, birds, rivers, springs, palms, turtles and flowers that make Florida the amazing place we call home. Moran's ever-evolving speaking programs have been called "exquisite," "powerful," "lyrical," and "like nothing I have ever seen." They offer a memorable look at a Florida seldom seen, interweaving adventure narrative, natural history, music and excellent photography.

The Joy of Birding
Keynote Presenter: Jeff Bouton Join the fun as Jeff takes a light-hearted look at the birding community and some of the many changes that have shaped his hobby over 22 years as an industry professional (a.k.a. "bins for hire"). Through a series of anecdotes and personal reflection, Jeff will offer examples of birding etiquette to be avoided, review the latest trends in birder fashion, describe the poorly understood "levels of birding," tackle difficult questions like "Why do we bird?" and delve into the darker corners of our shared obsession, including "listing" and other controversial topics. An avid birder for more than 22 years, Jeff currently works as the Product Specialist to the birder/naturalist markets for Leica Sport Optics, USA. He presents birding and optics seminars and guides field trips at bird festivals throughout the country and beyond.

Birds on the Wind: The Miracle of Migration
Keynote Presenter: Kevin T. Karlson
Kevin Karlson PhotographyNothing is more fascinating in the avian world than migratory movements of birds. From 20,000-mile annual journeys of Arctic Terns to 1,200-mile non-stop flights of Blackpoll Warblers, there are still many unanswered questions concerning the "how, why, where and when" of bird migration. This show begins with a review of different types of bird migration, giving general and specific examples of each in photos and words. Kevin then highlights different bird families and selected species that perform amazing feats of physical endurance each year during migration. Finally, interesting facts will be shared that maintain the mystique of bird migration. Several short interludes put to music will allow beautiful action images to enhance the migratory experience.
Kevin has been a wildlife photographer for 26 years and active as a birder for 28 years. He has traveled from the wilds of the Alaskan Arctic to the rainforests of South America to photograph birds. He recently completed an innovative book called "The Shorebird Guide" with co-authors Michael O'Brien and Richard Crossley, released by Houghton Mifflin Publishers in April 2006. This comprehensive field guide stresses a new and exciting concept of field identification based initially upon physical impressions.

Field Notes: An Odd Form of Self-help Therapy
Keynote Presenter: John Acorn Do you keep field notes? Or are you obsessed with amassing life lists, local lists, year lists, winter lists, or yard lists? Like John, you, too can learn to manage your own experience, and avoid the pitfalls that come with letting the lists, and the birds you "need" control your time in the field. Keeping detailed field notes can help you achieve this noble objective and keep the experience of being a naturalist "fresh" and intentionally free from disappointment, as it should be. A prolific writer, John Acorn has written 16 books, including many well-received field guides. John is perhaps best known as the writer and host of the television series "Acorn, The Nature Nut," a family-oriented, how-to-be-a-naturalist show. He also hosted "Twits and Pishers," a travel show for bird watchers.
