September 17, 2008 Titusville Police Taking Aggressive Approach on Spike in Property Crimes
Titusville, FL The Titusville Police Department wants our community to be completely aware of a vehicle burglary and auto-theft problem in our City right now because the actions of our community are just as important to the solution as the Police.Although our spike in vehicle burglaries and auto-thefts are no different than what other communities are dealing with across the nation, we are committed to the belief that our current property crime rates are unacceptable and we are determined to find success! We need the community to be keenly aware of the issues so that they can take specific steps to help our City combat this.
Most importantly, we want our residents to know specifically what we are dealing with: An increase in vehicle thefts and vehicle burglaries.
The aggressive approach we have already been taking this year will be supplemented further with a number of dramatic steps and changes in police officer assignments (we will not be specific for obvious reasons but the steps will include plainclothes officers, undercover vehicles, and targeting known criminals). Along with our innovative and unprecedented efforts toward our property crime issues we need our residents to take the following steps:
Along with proactive steps, we need our residents to be patient. Our response time to some non-crime, non-essential calls will suffer because of our unprecedented steps. Also, we do not engage in high-speed chases involving non-violent property crime suspects. "Although violent crime will always take precedence in our community, we are determined to utilize whatever resources we have to combat these property crime issues. And with the community on-board, we will find success!" Asst. Chief John Lau.
- Report Suspicious Activity! Use our non-emergency line to report anything or anyone that appears suspicious.
- Close garage doors! Close them when not in use, leaving them open whenever you are home is careless, and inviting to an opportunistic burglar.
- Lock your car doors! Majority of car burglaries involve an un-locked door in your driveway. Lock them always, don't leave valuables visible -make it a habit.
- Install anti-theft devices in your car (steering wheel locks like "The Club" are highly effective; why try your car if they can move onto a car without one?)
