3rd Annual 4-H Association Social Auction Extravaganza to be held April 16

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- The University of Florida / Brevard County Extension Service would like to extend a cordial invitation to the public for an "eggciting" event from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Wickham Park Equestrian center, 2500 Parkway Ave., Melbourne.

We will feature an appetizer hour at 2 p.m. filled with opportunities to socialize with youth exhibitors, view market poultry, and bid on silent auction items, immediately followed by a Poultry Auction.

For the past five months, our youth have been raising chicks in preparation for the auction, and the best trio of birds from each youth exhibitor will be featured. This year we will be auctioning 100 Delaware laying hens.

4-H teaches youth that there is more to winning than a blue ribbon. They also learn the hard work they put into their animal project leads them to succeed, and that they can confidently tackle any obstacle after being a 4-H member. 4-H is the only program in Brevard that supports life skill development through raising animals. Each year our program continues to grow, illustrating we have found a niche and youth are interested in livestock and small animal husbandry.

In addition to the poultry project, 4-H youth will also compete in culinary, fine arts, horticulture, photography, and sewing competitions. Stop by to admire displays of their creativity and talent.

UF/Brevard Extension Service Shares Tips To Help Avoid Zika Virus

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- With public concern about Zika, UF/IFAS Extension is giving tips on how to avoid contracting the virus.

Although the Zika virus is circulating in Central and South America and the Caribbean, currently, there is no evidence that local populations of Florida mosquitoes are infected. However, we need to be prepared and vigilant in case local transmission occurs, said Jorge Rey, professor and interim director of the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory (FMEL), in Vero Beach.

Roxanne Connelly, an Extension medical entomology specialist with FMEL, part of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, says:

  • People need to do all they can to manage the mosquitoes most likely to be involved in Zika virus transmission in Florida if the virus shows up in local mosquitoes. These mosquitoes are among those known as "container mosquitoes" specifically, the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, and the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus.
  • Initial measures include getting rid of containers in your yard or outside your business, because they collect water and become perfect habitats for immature stages of these mosquito species. These include tires, wheel barrows, potted plants that sit on saucers, cans, bottles and more. You should inspect your yard weekly to make sure you don't have any containers. Bromeliad plants and bird baths also can house container mosquitoes, Connelly said. For these types of mosquito habitats, they can be flushed with clean water weekly, or can be treated with mosquito-specific Bti granules (Mosquito Dunks or Mosquito Bits).
  • Inspect windows and doors for hole and tears and repair them to exclude mosquitoes.
  • Mosquito repellents should be used when people plan to be outdoors at the time mosquitoes are biting. The longest lasting repellents contain DEET and picaridin. Whatever type of repellant you use, read the label to make sure you're putting on a product registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

This research enables us to offer even more opportunities to provide affordable, healthy, local produce to our community.

A study by Moody's Economy showed that an increase of SNAP benefits by $1 creates a "ripple effect through the economy," resulting in $1.73 in economic stimulus. In fact, the study showed that "expanding [SNAP is one of] the most effective ways to prime the economy's pump."

UF/Brevard Extension Service agents earn Environmental Education Award

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- The University of Florida IFAS Extension Brevard County has received an Environmental Education award  from the National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences for its Budding Gardener Nutrition Camp (BGN) program.

A team consisting of UF/IFAS Brevard Agents Vanessa Spero-Swingle (4-H), Linda Seals (County Extension Director), Sally Scalera (Home Owner Horticulture), Elizabeth Shephard (Family and Consumer Sciences), and Holly Abeels (Marine Science) created a weeklong camp to address childhood obesity and "Nature Deficit Disorder." The latter has been used to describe the disproportionate amount of time children spend indoors rather than participating in outdoor activities.

BGN provides children with the opportunity to tend an onsite garden (funded through Brevard County Master Gardeners and Florida Ag in the Classroom grants) while learning the biology behind the garden and the physiology behind healthy eating. By creating a camp that is conducive to learning and exploring, youth can be encouraged to explore their environment and promote agricultural and environmental education.
