A new non-profit organization in Titusville, dedicated to promoting joyful music-making in families and in the wider community.

Through our programs, we will strive to:
Deepen relationships in families and the community through the efforts and rewards of making music

Inspire physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development in each participant through all stages of life

Give service to the community through free performances, especially at nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and to other groups who may otherwise seldom experience the gift of live music

Music For Life is a non-profit organization, founded in August 2002, whose mission is to promote music learning and performance in the Titusville, Florida area. There are currently two main components to the organization: the community music school and this website.

The music school has three main goals:

to promote music-making as a family activity
to provide opportunities for music-learning for people of all ages, eventually with sliding-scale tuition
to give service to the community through free performances, especially at nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and other groups who may otherwise seldom experience the gift of live music.

This website has three main parts:

a listing of classes available through Music For Life
a musical events calendar for Titusville and the surrounding area
a database of amateur and professional musicians, for the purpose of connecting performers with one another, with potential audiences and clients, and with students (for those musicians who desire to teach).

MFL Community Music School

Individual and group music lessons will be offered through the MFL Community Music School, eventually with sliding-scale tuition. To encourage music-making as a family activity, parents of students in elementary grades will be active participants in their child’s musical education. This means attending all lessons and guiding home practice sessions. Initial offerings:

Recorder Classes

for various age categories, from 5 through seniors. Parents will attend (and take instruction) with their elementary-aged children. If you think recorders are toys, we’d like to change your mind! Recorders have a huge repertoire of serious solo and ensemble pieces spanning more than 400 years. The program will be able to offer the smaller recorders for sale, and tenor and bass recorders for sale or rent.

Suzuki Flute Lessons

for elementary-aged students, aged 5 and up. The Suzuki method (which also can be used with strings, piano, harp, guitar, and voice) is internationally-acclaimed and is based upon the model for learning our native language. Although it was designed for young children, it is an appropriate method for anyone willing to begin lessons through a multi-sensory approach.

Parenting Classes

are based upon Suzuki principles and are open to anyone. They are especially appropriate for parents whose children are involved in any of the MFL music classes. (They are an integral part of Suzuki lessons.) These 10-week classes are designed to help you understand how to effectively nurture your children’s desire and ability to learn music (or any other skill).

There are a number of goals for each of the types of classes offered, but in keeping with the vision of Music for Life, one goal in every class is that students work towards sharing their skills with audiences in the community. The instructor and the students will arrange mutually convenient times to do so.

Other courses will be added to the program as interest is shown and as teaching staff allows. The courses above will begin in September, 2002. Classes will be held at various locations in Titusville.

FUTURE ADDITIONS

As Music For Life grows, we want to be responsive to the needs and desires of those we could serve. Let us know if you are:

a parent or student who wants a kind of lesson that is not yet offered. We will try then look for qualified teachers who believe in our family-oriented philosophy.
an institution with special needs that Music for Life’s amateur or professional musicians might be able to address.

Titusville is a wonderfully varied community.
