North Brevard Arts in the Garden ...
... is a local nonprofit 501 (c) (3) whose mission is to enrich the lives of disadvantaged children through art, music and dance.

Under Maxine Trainer's guiding hand, both children and young adults have been able to explore their passion for the arts and grow as independent, self-confident individuals. Regardless of a child's circumstance, every child that comes into the garden enters with a clean slate to work from.

The garden is a safe creative environment in which all kids will develop their talents, skills and dreams. It is a place where creative entrepreneurial leadership qualities are encouraged and self-confidence can bloom.

It is only through fundraising events such as The Mad Hatter's Tea Party and direct donations that North Brevard Arts in the Garden can continue to provide arts education to those children in our community who may not have access to such opportunities.

Enriching the lives of children through art, music and dance.

In 2005, Maxine Trainer began giving art classes in her garden. As an internationally recognized artist, this was not in her plan. The art classes came about because of a minor act of vandalism.

Art Table 1

This is an excerpt from an article which ran in the Florida Today Newspaper:
"She was looking out the window of her Rock Pit Road home when she saw some kids from the neighborhood stop at her garden to smell the flowers. She thought it was cute, until one of them ripped out a bunch of petunias, threw them on the ground, and ran away, laughing.

Trainer was upset, and chased the kids down the street. When she caught up with the culprit, she started quizzing him about why he did it. He didn't have much of an answer, but the conversation turned to his interest in art. During the next few weeks, he stopped by her house occasionally to watch her draw flowers.

"After six weeks, he ground me down," Trainer said.

What grew from the pile of crushed petunias was North Brevard Arts in the Garden and in February, 2013, the organization received their official non-profit 501(c)(3) status.

Under Maxine Trainer's guiding hand, both children and young adults have been able to explore their passion for the arts and grow as independent, self-confident individuals. Regardless of a child's circumstance, every one comes into the garden with a clean slate to work from.

Internship Program

Every year, Maxine Trainer takes in approximately 15 students, between the ages of 13 and 21, as interns and works with them for at least one full year.

These students receive instruction not only in art, but also on how to be an artist. Covering all aspects of being an artist, they learn how to value their art, how to work in a gallery, how to expand upon the talent they have, and most importantly, how to give back to the community.

Our community outreach programs have included:

Keep Titusville Clean Using recycled street signs, our interns painted signs reflecting their feelings about protecting our environment. Several of these signs can be seen on US 1 in Titusville.

Beautifying Our Animal Shelter Located on Flake Road in Titusville, the animal shelter has undergone a transformation that now makes it a fun place in which kids can go to help socialize animals, walk dogs or just give a frightened cat a nice brushing.

Donate

Donations of money, supplies and even just your time allow us to help more children every day.

All donations received by North Brevard Arts in the Garden go directly towards purchasing those items needed for the students. This includes art supplies, musical equipment, cleaning supplies and construction materials for new learning areas within the garden.

A donation of $155.00 will provide a scholarship for an art camp experience for one of Titusville's youths and will help the community in immeasurable ways. As an art patron, you will receive an original piece of artwork from the student you sponsored and a certificate acknowledging your generosity. North Brevard Arts in the Garden is a non-profit 501(c)(3) so all your donations are tax deductible.

Simaya, intern, age 17 writes:

Statistics don't have to be preached to those of us who see creativity and the curiosity that it instills in children deteriorating in our own communities. Art empowers those whose lives it touches with the ability to polish their own perception and present it to others.

Yet, these days, we observe more of the youth spending their time repeating the acts and ideas of others, rather than fluently expressing themselves as individuals.

Maxine Trainer, who received her artistic calling as a child in Liverpool, observed how coinciding creativity and positive thinking were decreasing in society; she became determined to offer that same artistic opportunity she received to members of her own community once she had matured.

The November 2013 Mad Hatter's Tea Party was amazing!

We fought with the weather earlier in the week, but the day turned out to be absolutely perfect!

So many hands went into creating this magical garden event - costumes, props, food, music, copying and distributing flyers - thank you to one and all!

The best part of the day was watching the kids have fun!
